David Gergen joins the annual Don R. Elliott Lecture Series as the 2022 speaker

At the annual Don R. Elliott Distinguished Presidential Lecture Series, David Gergen joined to speak on "How Great Leaders are Made." Sharing advice from lessons learned through Gergen's life and decades spent as a White House advisor.

The differences in generations shaped a large portion of the day. Whether with students or adults, Gergen led his words with encouragement and calls to action. In several capacities, each generation determines the future.  Generations are defined through life events in the coming-of-age years. These events lead to generations’ ways of thinking and leading. As part of the older generation in the room, Gergen urges, “Boomers, we’ve had time in the driver's seat. It’s time to return the keys.” The best thing to do is to step up and prepare a new generation.

Earlier, Gergen spent time answering questions presented by undergraduate students. Gergen advised students to use their young adult years to serve their communities and country as he has admired generations above him that were formed from the line of duty. Applauding those that have stepped up while young to use their voice.

The event took place on November 3 in the George Shinn Center. Michelle Steele led the student Q & A portion in the afternoon. Lipscomb president, Dr. Candice McQueen, and College of Leadership & Public Service dean, Steve Joiner, introduced the night with David Gergen. Former Lipscomb University provost, Craig Bledsoe, concluded the evening with an interview with Gergen.

We are pleased to announce Daniel Pink, author of five New York Times bestsellers, as the November 2023 speaker. Pink spent 1995 to 1997 as chief speechwriter to Vice President Al Gore.
