Raymond B. Jones College of Engineering Academic Programs

Your engineering success starts here.

Never before has the engineering industry played such a vital role on a worldwide stage. Today, our undergraduate students in the Raymond B. Jones College of Engineering are designing and installing bridges in underdeveloped countries, building cars, finding and embedding hidden data in images, developing renewable energy systems, and designing and building autonomous robotic systems. Our students are exposed to people, industry and cultures in the U.S. and abroad, to see firsthand how their experiences and knowledge will play a role in the future of society.

You might have questions about laptop recommendations, scholarship application, or what a typical high school background looks like; you can find information on that on our prospective students page.

At Lipscomb, we have three ABET accredited degree paths for you to choose from:

  • Bachelor of Science
    Civil Engineering

Study everything civil engineering encompasses: structural, environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic and more. Hone the technical skills of design and construction. All that we do is designed to prepare you for the life-long learning that will sustain you through a professional career filled with technological advancement.

  • Bachelor of Science
    Electrical and Computer Engineering

The field of electrical and computer engineering has created a more accessible world using breakthrough technology. Begin innovating the future through our rigorous program and unique opportunities such as engineering missions, professional societies and innovative design projects.

  • Bachelor of Science
    Mechanical Engineering

Our faculty will guide you through the process of seeing unmet needs, understanding the constraints on choices, using mathematics to solve simplified models and testing for solutions. You’ll have access to unique programs such as engineering missions, professional societies and innovative design projects.

  • Bachelor of Science, Minor
    Computer Science

Since computing is key to all disciplines, the skills you grow under the guidance of our experienced faculty will let you to chart a course in any field of your choice. Whether it's games, media, health care or another industry, this ABET-accredited program will get you there.

  • Bachelor of Science, Minor
    Cybersecurity

Governments, corporations, financial institutions, hospitals and private businesses all amass confidential information and must do so in a responsible, ethical manor. Our experienced faculty will train you to do just that, whatever your industry of choice.

  • Bachelor of Science, Minor
    Information Technology

Computer technology is at the core of nearly every modern enterprise. Here, you’ll learn how to study, design, create, utilize, support and manage computer-based systems, software applications and computer hardware.

  • Bachelor of Science, Minor
    Software Engineering

Software is present in most technology we use every day, so it's no surprise that people with software development skills are in high demand. Our program will expose you to the theory and practical aspect of software development in a Christian context.

  • Student Organizations & Professional Societies

    Baja SAE

Baja SAE is a collegiate competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and small-engine manufacturer Briggs and Stratton. The competition simulates real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges.

Each team is supplied a ten-horsepower Model 19 engine from Briggs and Stratton; around which the team must build an off-road vehicle. For over 10 years, Lipscomb has designed, tested, built, and raced in Baja.

Currently, the team is comprised of mostly mechanical engineers, however students of all disciplines are encouraged to be a part of the team. Participating in Baja gives students the opportunity to work on real-life problems.

In the 2018 competition in Maryland, our team and their vehicle, Bane, placed in the top half of the competition overall and top third of endurance.

For more information about participating, contact our team captain at motorsports@lipscomb.edu.

    AISC

Student teams participate in the annual American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC).

    ASCE

Lipscomb's ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Student Chapter received our charter in Spring 2012, and we are continually building our student involvement in the community and the club.

We have club social events such as cookouts and golf outings. We participate in State and Regional ASCE Competitions. Every month, we welcome a technical speaker to talk about a specific field in Civil Engineering.  ASCE is a great networking tool for students and professionals.

If you have any questions about the student chapter or would like to be added to the emailing list, please contact one of our officers at engineering@lipscomb.edu.

    Joining ASCE

In order to be a member of ASCE National Society, students are encouraged to be a student chapter member as well. Pay dues to the Lipscomb ASCE treasurer.

    Dues:
    Upperclassmen - $15
    Freshmen - $5

    ASME

Lipscomb University has an active student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Our ASME chapter offers tutoring: Junior and Senior Mechanical Engineering students tutor underclassmen in calculus, physics and statistics. This type of servant-leadership is part of what separates Lipscomb Engineering from other engineering programs.

ASME also promotes the engineering profession to the larger Nashville community. Each February during National Engineers Week we support outreach activities for young students, including our rocket car derby.

    IEEE

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is an internationally known professional society. IEEE is known for setting multiple standards across the electronic and communications fields. Members of IEEE not only include Electrical and Computer Engineers, but also physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and many more professional.

Lipscomb boasts the largest Student Branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in central Tennessee, and the third largest in the state.

Over 90 percent of Lipscomb's electrical and computer engineering students are IEEE members - as well as students from other majors.

At the yearly IEEE student conference (Southeast Con), our students compete in the autonomous robotics student competition, as well as networking, software and ethics competitions.

Lipscomb IEEE student branch members also develop and host activities for K-12 students as part of our STEM outreach efforts. We participate in IEEE and VandyHacks Hackathons, attend professional society meetings and socialize together on IEEE Game Nights.

Student Chapter Mission:  The goal of the student chapter at Lipscomb is to help improve a student's experience in their technical field.

Vision:  IEEE will be essential to the global technical community and to technical professionals everywhere, and be universally recognized for the contributions of technology and of technical professionals in improving global conditions.
