K-12 teachers are expected to handle the basics and then some—everything from multiplication to music.

The College of Education partners with our other academic departments to help you master a wide range of subjects and embark on a lifelong career.

    Disability Studies

    If you want to work with individuals with disabilities outside the classroom, this is the degree for you. You’ll gain experience and confidence through a handful of both on-campus and off-site organizations that will provide you with real-time opportunities.

  • Endorsement
    English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement

    Teaching candidates who are seeking initial licensure (PK-3, K-5, or 6-8 grades) can also seek an English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement. Adding an ESL endorsement provides evidence of your skills and can make you even more marketable as a teacher.

    Interdisciplinary Teaching

    Learn from our accomplished faculty who will set you on the path to be a confident, competent, conscious teacher. You’ll have flexible coursework allowing you to gain extra certifications or even to teach abroad! Your frequent teaching experiences in local schools will continue to grow your abilities and connections.

    Special Education Interventionist

    If you have a passion to teach and develop students with disabilities, you’re in the right place. You will gain general education training so that you will confidently be able to teach literacy and math skills. You will also receive specialized training including individualized education plans and behavior plans.

  • Education (Minor)

    Combined with an undergraduate major of your choosing, a minor in Education will help you to effectively share your knowledge with others. Learn from our accomplished faculty who will set you on the path to be a confident and competent teacher.

  • Subject Area Teaching

    We work with other departments to help students prepare for teaching K-12 (art, theatre, health and physical education, instrumental and vocal music). We also offer endorsements in French, German and Spanish. Secondary education candidates will graduate with a teaching major in the subject area they want to teach. Students can also complete state requirements for endorsement in additional high school subjects. Most of our undergraduate students will graduation with either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree.

    Biology Teaching

    Our scientists will mentor you and ready you to think critically. You'll grow your working knowledge of biology. So come gain research experience in our state-of-the-art laboratories. Your time here will equip you to enter research graduate programs or professional schools, too.

    Chemistry Teaching

    You'll gain an excellent background in chemistry as well as the educational knowledge you need to prepare for your own students. Chemistry teachers are in demand. Our students are regularly recruited. They move on to be educational administrators — headmasters, principals, and assistant principals.

    You'll be prepared in the areas of classroom management and intercultural competence along with literature, writing, cultural studies and communication core studies. A diverse set of local schools will welcome you in and provide you with hands-on learning opportunities.

    French Teaching

    You'll have the opportunity to build language proficiency while also developing expertise in teaching language to others. With a contemporary approach to language instruction, our students learn how to give quality input in the target language (known as Comprehensible Input) and to design activities that require meaningful interaction.

    Health & Physical Education Teaching

    The Health and Physical Education teaching degree prepares students to deliver quality health education and physical education to young people in grades K-12. The courses were all designed to follow best practices for preparing excellent teachers who are passionate about the health and fitness of our youth.

    Examine human behavior and learn to understand the world around you through the lens of different cultural perspectives and ethical values. Your studies will give you a deeper context for politics, religion and your own faith.

    We have a very high placement rate for employment of our graduates. Recent graduates have been recognized for excellence in teaching. Two have been named Teacher of the Year in Metro Nashville within the last five years.

    Music Teaching

    Prepare yourself to teach others about your passion for music. Our Bachelor of Music in Music Education leads to K-12 licensure in Tennessee — which is transferable to other states. So let us prepare you to teach in vocal/general or instrumental music. You'll learn how to plan and install classroom lessons and gain experience working and observing in public schools. You'll practice teaching and rehearsing performance ensembles, too.

    Physics Teaching

    Our physics courses are designed to give you a background in mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum physics and relativity theory so that you can pursue graduate work in physics or careers in the technical/scientific industry. As a teaching major, you'll receive core and specialized professional education in addition to the general education required.

    This program, in partnership with the Department of Visual Arts, prepares you to teach art at primary and secondary levels. You'll be encouraged to take on a studio practice as you prepare to teach.
