IV Fluid Management: Does It Really Matter?

Susan Hamblin, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP, FCCM
Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice

Crystalloid fluids, such as Normal Saline and Lactated Ringer’s solutions, have historically been perceived as trivial components of patient care. However, significant differences in various products have shown an effect on patient outcomes. We will review the literature supporting balance IV solutions for various indications and summarize the potential clinical impact of IV fluid choice. Certain clinical populations with specific indications for one product or another will be discussed. Lastly, the growing body of literature suggesting the harms of excess fluid administration will be explored.
