Milton Chen -- ‘Sesame Street,’ alum -- tops the bill at the Lipscomb University College of Education Alumni Summit June 27

The Lipscomb University College of Education invites alumni to attend the college’s first Alumni Summit, to be held Friday, June 27, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and featuring Milton Chen, a former researcher for the TV show “Sesame Street” and the executive director emeritus of the George Lucas Educational Foundation.

The event is free to all Lipscomb education alumni and includes a free lunch. The Alumni Summit is a special day to reconnect with former classmates and professors as well as receive professional development in breakout sessions. The highlight of the day will be the morning talk by Chen, winner of the Elmo Award from Sesame Workshop and the Fred Rogers Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Professional development breakout sessions will cover topics such as the digital world, leadership, applied behavioral analysis, advocacy in education, recommended books for the classroom and Common Core State Standards.

Chen served for 12 years at the George Lucas Educational Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that utilizes its multimedia website and documentary films to communicate a new vision for 21st century schools. He was credited with greatly expanding their editorial publishing efforts.

Prior to the foundation, Chen's career included serving as director of education research for Sesame Workshop, helping to develop “Sesame Street,” “The Electric Company” and “3-2-1 Contact.” He also served for 10 years as founding director of KQED Center for Education (PBS) in San Francisco.

Chen has been an assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and was one of 35 Fulbright New Century Scholars conducting research on access and diversity issues in higher education and K-12.

On-campus housing options are available for those who may live out of town but wish to attend the Alumni Summit and Lipscomb’s Summer Celebration, occurring June 29-July 1.
