Hutcheson Gallery presents 'Beyond the Material,' a photography exhibit by Gretchen Haien, Oct. 16-Dec. 15

Lipscomb University’s John C. Hutcheson Gallery presents “Beyond the Material,” an exhibit by award-winning artist and photographer Gretchen Haien, Oct. 16 through Dec. 15.
An opening reception will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, from 6-8 p.m. in the James D. Hughes Center, and will feature a talk by Haien. This event is free and open to the public.
"Ms. Haien's compositional framing takes the everyday and ordinary - such as a pool of water, lawn chairs, or a brick wall - and makes it heroic, stunning and beautiful," said Angela Lee, assistant professor of art at Lipscomb. "With this show, she gives us the ability to see through her eyes and reconsider familiar surroundings."
Since 1987, Haien has owned and operated Studio 4 in Jackson, Mississippi, a professional studio that offers creative, commercial, and fine art photographic services to advertising agencies and government agencies, architects, interior designers and private individuals seeking fine art portraiture for both national and international clients.
Born in Michigan and raised in Pennsylvania, Haien has taught photography as an adjunct for over 20 years at both Millsaps College and Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi, before joining Belhaven fulltime in 2007. She has also been involved in many solo, juried and invitational exhibitions in Mississippi, Virginia, New York and Louisiana.
In 2005, Haien received the Mississippi Arts and Letters Award in Photography in 2005, and was been named an "Emerging Artist to Watch in Photography" by the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C in 2007.
Located in the James D. Hughes Center at Lipscomb University, the John C. Hutcheson Gallery opened in fall of 2010. Curated by Lipscomb visual arts department faculty, the Hutcheson Gallery features a variety of exhibitions each semester. This gallery provides an opportunity to study, exhibit, stimulate appreciation for and advance knowledge of works of art that collectively represent the broadest spectrum of human achievement and artistic interests.
The Hutcheson Gallery is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be open Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., however, hours may vary during scheduled events. The Hutcheson Gallery is best accessible from the Belmont Boulevard entrances to campus.
