Just Mercy

The Office of Intercultural Development and the Black Student Union will be hosting a special screening of “Just Mercy” at the Regal Cinema in 100 Oaks on Wednesday, February 5, at 7 p.m. Student tickets are only $5 and can be picked up in the OID. Limited tickets are available.

“Just Mercy” stars Michael B. Jordan, as well as Oscar winners Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson. The film is an inspiring drama directed by award-winning filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, who brings this important story to the big screen from a screenplay he co-wrote, based on the award-winning nonfiction bestseller by Bryan Stevenson.

The movie is the powerful, thought-provoking true story of young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Stevenson passed up lucrative job opportunities to go to Alabama and defend the wrongly condemned there who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson).

One of Stevenson’s first cases was that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him was from a criminal with a motive to lie.
