Undergrad film program top-ranked in Tennessee, No. 26 in nation

Lipscomb University’s undergraduate film program has been ranked the top in Tennessee and No. 26 in the nation in the 2017 College Choice Best Film Bachelor’s Degrees ranking recently released.

film ranking_1Housed in the School of Theatre and Cinematic Arts in the George Shinn College of Entertainment & the Arts, Lipscomb’s Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in film production was ranked among the top in the nation along with Loyola Marymount University, Boston University, the University of Southern California, New York University, UCLA, California Institute for the Arts, Savannah College of Art and Design, the Los Angeles Film School, University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Swarthmore College. Lipscomb University is the only institution located in Tennessee on the list.

“Obtaining a film degree is valuable if you intend to work in the movie industry. Whether you want to work lighting or be the director of a film, a bachelor’s degree in film will provide you more opportunity,” according to a release by College Choice.

“With a Bachelor’s degree in film, many students can go on to have very lucrative careers. Film and video editors can make on average $59,040 a year as well as camera operators. A producer or director can earn $70,950 a year. If you are particularly well known in your field, your earning potential can increase significantly. With film industry jobs looking to increase by as much as 9 percent over the next few years the amount, you could earn be, even more, making your Bachelor’s degree in Film quite valuable.”

film ranking_2The ranking lists the best schools at which to obtain the Best Bachelor in Film degrees, according to College Choice. The organization said it ranked schools that are well-known for their film programs, and ranked each according to instructional excellence, student success and student satisfaction. Researchers also examined “the way each school approaches its film studies and how well they serve their students.”

Lipscomb University’s BFA in film production provides real-world instruction and expertise to students. Courses include Multimedia Storytelling, Film as Literature, The Documentary, Media and Culture, Line Producing, Screenwriting, Cinematography, Directing for Film and Digital Imaging among others.

The School of Theatre and Cinematic Arts also offers two graduate degrees.

“We offer two unique graduate degrees designed to educate the next generation of artists to be independent, entrepreneurial filmmakers who graduate ready to create uplifting content for the digital entertainment marketplace,” said Steve Taylor, director of the School of Theatre and Cinematic Arts.
