The spring cohort added to the annual fall cohort puts the number of yearly admissions at Lipscomb on par with other top nursing schools in the area, said Ruth Corey, executive director for the School of Nursing.

Enrollment procedures, type and quality of curriculum and clinical opportunities will be equivalent for both the spring and fall cohorts, Corey said, but offering parallel pathways to graduation at two different time periods offers several benefits for Lipscomb’s nursing students.

It will also improve the capacity for graduates to find nursing employment in the spring as well as to take advantage of extracurricular programs such as study abroad opportunities or playing collegiate athletics. “The alternate timing will allow the spring cohort to be more competitive in the marketplace,” Corey said.

As another benefit, if a student nurse needs to re-take a class, they can now do that in the spring semester, rather than waiting until the next fall semester, putting them a year behind.

Two program entry points also provides more options to students who wish to transfer into Lipscomb from other colleges as either the fall or spring timing may work better with the curriculum schedule at other nursing programs.

“This opportunity is an open door for students at an institution that strives to serve the student and the community in building quality nurses who will one day meet the needs of a growing health care system and its complex needs,” Corey said. “Spring admission is one way we are looking to the future to support students in becoming successful, well-rounded and highly valued nurses to go and serve where they are needed.”
