The fun began with Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15, and a variety of events designed to help students learn the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans and connect with more students on campus. The on-campus events kicked off with a Fall Fiesta in Bison Square with live music, games and food. Activities continued throughout the month with the Office of Intercultural Development (OID) serving Agua Fesca in Bennett Campus Center and Raíces, a campus student organization for students with roots in Latin America, hosting Loteria game night. Students also enjoyed the annual Salsa en el Square and Bailemos con Raíces dance night.

OID also provided opportunities for students to learn about and engage in different cultures through the university’s annual Welcome to Our World (WOW) week, Oct. 3-8. Activities included an international trivia night, fashion show and food truck. Alumnus Ron Nguyen demonstrated Thai boxing, and there was a spicy noodle challenge hosted by Asian Connection and a cannoli giveaway by Club Italiano, in addition to African food and music in the square hosted by the African Student Association. The week ended with the Black Student Union providing students an opportunity to attend HBCU Tennessee State University’s football game and homecoming parade.
