Many people spent the Thanksgiving break at home with their families, studying for finals or simply enjoying the week off.

For one Lipscomb student, however, the break was spent earning a spot in the 2021 College Fishing National Championship.

Dalton Dowdy, a South Carolina native, won the tournament by a one-pound margin taking the top spot in the 119 team tournament. He caught a total of five bass for a 15 pound weigh-in. Dowdy will be competing for a national title in May and the opportunity to compete in the 2021 Toyota Series Championship as a pro angler with a grand prize for over $200,000.

Dowdy began fishing at a young age with his father and has enjoyed fishing all of his life. However, his interest in competitive tournaments began his senior year of high school. Injuries kept him from finishing his athletic career in high school, leading him to find another outlet for his competitive drive.

While this is his first year competing for Lipscomb, Dowdy has fished multiple tournaments prior to joining the team. Dowdy and his teammate, Mason True, competed in another tournament earlier this year on Lake Guntersville in Alabama where they finished 68th out of 148. Dowdy plans to fish in the three tournaments for the southeastern region of the 2021 season if school work allows. The National Championship will be March 3-5, 2021 at Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma.
