Engineering students take top honors in regional competition

The concrete canoe team took first place in regional competition for the second consecutive year.
A delegation of 28 students and four faculty from Raymond B. Jones College of Engineering’s civil engineering department ventured south the first weekend in April to participate in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Mid-South Student Symposium. As part of the symposium, held at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, engineering students competed alongside other colleges and universities in Arkansas and Tennessee in a variety of categories.
This year, students represented Lipscomb in concrete canoe, steel bridge, surveying, professional paper, Fundamentals of Engineering Quiz Bowl, T-shirt design and Mystery Event categories.

Lipscomb’s concrete canoe team finished first place overall for the second consecutive year. The concrete canoe competition comprises multiple facets including design and casting of a concrete canoe, design report, a presentation and racing. On race day, the canoe is judged on aesthetics and the ability to pass a “Swamp Test,” a floatation test. Multiple classifications of races are held. In addition to finishing first overall, Lipscomb finished well in the individual races. Anna Davidson, junior civil engineering major, is project engineer. The team will compete next at nationals later this spring. The concrete canoe team also entered its team T-shirt into the T-shirt competition, winning second place.
In other competition, seniors Mathias White, Joseph Spillers and Isaac Braaten, placed second in the Fundamentals of Engineering Quiz Bowl. Senior Isaac Braaten placed third in the professional paper competition for his work entitled, “Balancing Ethics and Regulations in Geoengineering.” Entries are judged on writing and presentation. Lipscomb’s steel bridge team, under the leadership of team captain Aaron Hardy, junior, built a bridge that passed the lateral deflection test and was successfully loaded to 1,600 lbs.

New this year was a surveying competition. Lipscomb’s team, led by captain Dylan Maynard, landed just off the podium in fourth place. In the Mystery Event, a team of four Lipscomb students constructed a roller coaster for a marble composed completely of copier paper. The team came in first place.
The American Society of Civil Engineers, the country’s oldest engineering society, hosts various student symposiums across the globe on an annual basis. Lipscomb’s Raymond B. Jones College of Engineering offers ABET accredited undergraduate programs in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering as well as in computer science.
