2022 Update: The College of Computing and Technology is now the School of Computing and the School of Data Analytics and Technology.

Lipscomb University’s College of Computing & Technology is partnering with Qualex Consulting Services Inc. to use EMMA Care™, an innovative telemedicine software solution that may be used to detect the coronavirus, as a teaching tool that gives data science students an opportunity to test and learn the latest technology.

Students will study EMMA Care™, a cloud solution that provides health care providers real-time communication with their patients, enabling physicians and data scientists to unlock advanced insights and drive patient outcomes. The system includes 39 predictive models to predict eight risk conditions and a complete health index score. It ensures remote interaction between the doctor and the patient to continuously track any changes in the patient’s health and facilitates real-time monitoring of the patient’s health using a central database and prompt responses to any change in the patient’s health condition.

EMMA Care™, will provide valuable learning opportunities for College of Computing & Technology students, especially using the COVID-19 pandemic as a real-life learning opportunity. Lipscomb students will augment testing of the solution with additional algorithms using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and machine learning  techniques.

“We were seeking an opportunity for our students to test remote tracking, machine learning and artificial intelligence using remote mechanisms to leverage best practices in the healthcare delivery process and measure treatment effectiveness,” said Dr. John Brocklebank, dean of Lipscomb’s College of Computing & Technology. “This is especially timely with the coronavirus emergency facing our nation and provides a very real-world application and learning experience. The partnership with Qualex enables our students to test this powerful mobile technology to help the community enhance remote monitoring across people, processes and facilities particularly during this time.”

“Testing advanced mobile technologies from a proven provider in a timely fashion was critical to our decision, knowing the educational benefit this will be to our students in preparing them for the workforce,” he continued. “Qualex understands the unique needs for using technology to fight the virus as well as how providing our students an opportunity to learn from it fits into the broader learning objectives for our students.”

Qualex officials hope EMMA Care™, provides a technology solution to help fight the COVID-19 outbreak as it automatically stores vital sign information to help healthcare providers take appropriate actions on the root causes of adverse conditions.

“We are pleased to partner with Lipscomb’s College of Computing & Technology to provide students a unique educational opportunity for them to experience how technology impacts the quality of patient care,” said Al Cordoba, Qualex chief information officer. “With EMMA Care™, they have an innovative solution to learn from. Our aim with this software is to diminish transit to-and-from medical centers, assist researchers in unlocking valuable information resources, improve patient-provider communication efficiency and build strong defenses during the COVID-19 dissemination.”

Brocklebank said the integration of EMMA Care™, into the curriculum will begin immediately. Classes resume March 30 at Lipscomb University in a remote format following an extended spring break due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
