National Scholarships
Applications are reviewed first by a Lipscomb University committee, with a certain number endorsed and sent on to the award granting organization for the next round in the selection process; students cannot apply directly, but must go through Lipscomb University’s nomination process.
Please note that the internal deadlines indicated are approximations for general planning purposes only. Applications must meet actual deadlines, which are announced each year as they become available.
Beinecke Scholarship
Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. There are no geographic restrictions on the use of the scholarship, and recipients are allowed to supplement the award with other scholarships, assistantships and research grants. Scholars are encouraged to begin graduated study as soon as possible following graduation from college, and must utilize all of the funding within five years of completion of undergraduate studies.
Benjamin Gilman Scholarship
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career oriented internships abroad. Such international exchange is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.
Boren Scholarship**
Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
Churchill Scholarship
At least fourteen Churchill Scholarships are offered annually. The Scholarship is tenable from nine to twelve months, in accordance with the academic program. The Churchill Scholarship is worth between $45,000 and $50,000, depending on the exchange rate. It covers all University and College fees (currently about $25,000). In addition, Churchill Scholars receive a living allowance of £11,000 if enrolled in a nine-month program, £12,000 if enrolled in a ten- or eleven-month program, and £13,000 if enrolled in a full-year program. They receive an allowance of up to $1,000 for travel to and from the United Kingdom, as well as reimbursement of applications fees for a UK visa (currently up to $433). In addition, the Foundation now offers a Travel Award of $500 to enable Churchill Scholars to take better advantage of opportunities to travel in the United Kingdom, on the Continent, and wherever else good airfares lead them.
The Foundation also offers the possibility of a Special Research Grant of up to $2,000; this grant may cover travel for presentations at international conferences, short stays at another university or institute for special research, and other activities.
DAAD German Exchange Scholarships**
Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or an independent study abroad semester or year.
DoD SMART Scholarship
The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories.
Fulbright Scholarship
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest U.S. exchange program offering opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and primary and secondary school teaching worldwide. The program currently awards approximately 1,900 grants annually in all fields of study, and operates in more than 140 countries worldwide. Fulbright U.S. Student alumni populate a range of professions and include ambassadors, members of Congress, judges, heads of corporations, university presidents, journalists, artists, professors, and teachers. Bose Corporation founder Amar Bose, actor John Lithgow, composer Philip Glass, opera singer Renee Fleming and economist Joseph Stiglitz are among notable former grantees.
Gates Cambridge Scholarship**
The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are one of the most prestigious international scholarships in the world. The program was established in 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge; this is the largest ever single donation to a UK university. While at Cambridge, Scholars pursue full range of subjects available at the University and are spread through its departments and Colleges.
Hertz Foundation Fellowships**
To provide unique financial and fellowship support to the nation’s most remarkable PhD students in the physical, biological and engineering sciences. Fellowships are free of most traditional restrictions. Hertz Fellows become innovators and leaders serving in ways that benefit us all.
Language Flagship Fellowship
Flagship Fellowships are awards that provide up to two years of funding to support academic expenses directly associated with participation in a Flagship Program, including tuition, a modest stipend for living expenses, support for travel costs, and health insurance coverage. The living stipend is based on reasonable costs associated with the location of each Flagship Program. Total Flagship Fellowship amounts will vary by individual depending upon the composition and duration of the program. Fellowship award amounts cannot include additional support for dependents.
Flagship Fellows are expected to devote full-time effort in the Flagship Program in which they are enrolled. Therefore, Flagship Fellows may not pursue requirements of other degree programs while receiving Flagship Fellowship support, nor may Flagship Fellowships be combined with other sources of funding that would require Fellows to devote less than full-time effort to the Flagship Program of study.
Flagship Fellowships can be awarded to new applicants to the following Master’s degree granting Flagship Programs: University of Maryland Arabic Flagship Program, Indiana University Chinese Flagship Program, University of Hawaii Korean Flagship Program, and University of Maryland Persian Flagship Program. Flagship Fellowships are also offered to students who have completed their first year at a Flagship Master’s degree granting domestic program and are pursuing their second year of the program at a Flagship overseas institution. Flagship Fellowships may be awarded for study at the following Flagship overseas institutions: Alexandria University, Nanjing University, Korea University, and Tajik State National University.
Madison Graduate Fellowship
The maximum amount of each award is $24,000, prorated over the period of study. In no case shall the award exceed $12,000 for one academic year of study. Normally, Fellows receive less than these maximum amounts. Payments are made only for the actual costs of tuition, required fees, books, and room and board, and are made only for the minimum number of credits required for the award of the degree for which a Fellow is registered.
Marshall Scholarship
Marshall Scholarships are mainly funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and are overseen by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission. The Secretariat is provided by the Association of Commonwealth Universities. In the US the selection process is managed by the regional Consulates General in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, and in Washington DC by the British Embassy.
Mitchell Scholarship
Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: scholarship, leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service. The Mitchell Scholars Program provides tuition, accommodations, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend.
Pickering Fellowship**
The Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship is funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The Department of State seeks a Foreign Service that reflects the diversity and excellence of our society. The Fellowship is designed to attract outstanding individuals from all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career with the U.S. Department of State.
Rhodes Scholarship
Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead. The Rhodes Trust, a British charity established to honor the will and bequest of Cecil J. Rhodes, provides full financial support for Rhodes Scholars to pursue a degree or degrees at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom in partnership with the Second Century Founder, John McCall MacBain and other generous benefactors.
Ronald Reagan College Leaders Scholarship
Annual scholarships shall be in the amount of $10,000, $7,500 $5,000, $2,500 or other amounts at the Trustees’ discretion and shall be made available to the student at the start of the third (i.e., junior) year of studies.
Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship**
Each fellowship supports up to two years of graduate study – in any field and in any advanced degree-granting program – in the United States. Each award is for up to $25,000 in maintenance grants and up to $20,000 in tuition support for each year of graduate study supported, a total of as much as $90,000.
Udall Scholarship
The Udall Foundation awards scholarships, fellowships, and internships for study in fields related to the environment and to American Indians and Alaska Natives in fields related to health care and tribal public policy; provides funding to the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy and to the Native Nations Institute to conduct environmental policy research, research on American Indian and Alaska Native health care issues and tribal public policy issues, and training; and provides assessment, mediation, training, and other related services through the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution.
Xerox Techincal Minority Scholarship**
Xerox is committed to the academic success of all minority students. That’s why we offer a Technical Minority Scholarship that awards between $1,000 and $10,000 to qualified minorities enrolled in a technical degree program at the bachelor level or above.
