Cozumel (BAM) Spring Break 2023 - Alumni Stories

In March I had the privilege of working with my former professor and a few fellow Lipscomb Alums to do some accounting work for Ciudad de Angeles, an orphanage in Cozumel, Mexico. During our time in Cozumel we were able to inspect the financial records of the non‐profit, interview staff members, and develop an understanding of the organization’s ministry. We evaluated the entity’s business processes and offered suggestions for improvements to the
local management and the Board of Directors. This trip was one of my first opportunities post‐graduation to use my professional skills in a ministry capacity. It was a fun experience to collaborate with my peers and it was energizing to know that the work we were doing was making an impact. I was encouraged by the way everyone on the team brought unique skills and perspectives to our work. I learned a lot from the work and from our collaboration. The fact that I can participate in opportunities like this post‐graduation is just one reason I’m so thankful for Lipscomb. The relationships and connections I have made (and continue to make!) are a blessing!

Participating in this mission trip was a very fulfilling experience. I would have never thought that I could use my work skills on a mission trip, but this experience gave me a new perspective on the importance of accounting. We wanted to make sure that the donor’s money was being used efficiently to help the kids and we were gladly surprised to find that the directors had good processes and controls in place to manage the cash in the orphanage. We found ourselves in a very collaborative environment, where the directors were transparent about the organization and open to hear our advice on potential process improvements. Going on this kind of mission trip made me realize how lucky I am to have grown up in such a supportive environment. Sometimes we forget to appreciate the little things in life, like having a plate of food on the table every day or being able to use our parents' help in difficult situations. I often forget how privileged I am for growing up in a traditional environment and having great opportunities to develop myself thanks to my parents’ support. The trip was a great reminder that I should not take those things for granted and I should be more appreciative of all the effort that my parents put into raising me.

This was easily one of the most fulfilling missions trips that I have been on. It made me very
happy to be able to use the skills that I honed in college and my few years of work to be able to
help others. Our team was fantastic and so were the people that we interacted with at Ciudad de
Angeles.
The experience was also eye-opening as well, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to
spend time with people from a different culture. It helped me learn more about myself, possibly
as much as I learned new information about others. For any accounting major, I would highly
recommend going on this trip if you have the opportunity.
