Director's Note

Welcome! We are so glad that you are here.

After such a long, tough season, we wanted something lively and lighthearted as our fall musical. Mamma Mia quickly rose to the top of our list! Yes, there’s a lot of dancing, singing, and good vibes, but there’s also a lot of heart to this show. And who doesn’t love the music of ABBA?!  At its core, Mamma Mia explores how we can define our futures as we reconcile our pasts.

If you’re wondering how we’ve navigated live theatre during the pandemic, the exciting news is that we kept the creative lights flickering through filmed plays, musicals, dances, as well as in-house staged readings. You can see some of these on our Lipscomb Theatre Youtube Channel. For this production, we took every precaution to ensure a safe and healthy environment. We also cast understudies for every single role. That’s right: almost every single person you see on stage is playing both their role while completely ready to step into another role, plus four extraordinary offstage “swings” who have readied five roles each. We’ve done everything we can to pull this show together, and we couldn’t be more proud to share our first live show back with you.

This production is dedicated in loving memory of Haley Sue Pearson, our alumna, friend, colleague, and forever Dancing Queen.

Beki Baker, M.F.A.
Chair/Director

Lipscomb Theatre is dedicated to loving our neighbors via the empathetic art of theatre which helps us understand lives, perspectives, and experiences very different from our own. We hope that every production we mount respectfully engages without judgment the full range of human experience and increases our capacity for love.
