Welcome from the Program Director

Hazel ArthurHi! I’m Hazel Arthur, the Social Work Program Director and Chair of the Department of Social Work and Sociology at Lipscomb University. If you’ve come to our site, you may be thinking about social work as a major or career. If that’s the case, one of these thoughts may be familiar to you.

  • You’re the friend everybody talks to about their problems
  • Your friends say you’re a good listener
  • You love working with children or the elderly
  • You enjoyed your high school psychology class and like figuring out “how people tick”
  • You are saddened by news stories of hurting people and want to make it better
  • You want to make a difference in people's lives and the world

Social work is a great field for people who have had those thoughts. Social workers love people and love helping people; we want to make the world a better place. Those of us who are Christians want to do all of that for God.

Lipscomb’s social work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The program was most recently accredited in 2014. Strengths identified in the site visit report included faculty, curriculum, students, field placements, and community relationships. These are awesome things to have acknowledged. Review our most recent outcomes by clicking the link below.

Lipscomb students complete over 500 hours of supervised work in the field prior to graduating. That experience makes Lipscomb Social Work students preferred for jobs and graduate school. Available placements include those with children, the elderly, and families; in schools, medical settings, and counseling or family service agencies, and many others.

Lipscomb students earn the Bachelor of Social Work Degree. They’re doing great things in Nashville and the world while they’re here and even greater things in graduate school and employment when they finish.

I hope this has been just enough information to peak your interest and make you want to learn more about social work and Lipscomb. Maybe it has confirmed what you already know about wanting to be in a great Christian environment for learning or a great field for making a difference in the world. If so, look further, “meet” our faculty and students, and peruse our curriculum. Better yet, call or email me to ask questions or plan a visit!
