Marriage and Family Therapy is a mental health profession which has at its theoretical foundation in a systemic and relational philosophy. Marriage and family therapists provide mental health treatment that takes into consideration the relational context of an individual, couple, family, or larger system. Thus, marriage and family therapists treat a wide range of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety while also addressing relational problems including communication issues, intimacy problems, and infidelity.
Marriage and family therapists follow the AAMFT Code of Ethics, a document that guides the practice of MFT toward excellent care and the protection and safety of clients. The AAMFT Code of Ethics in inspired by the ancient ethic found in the beginning of the Hippocratic oath, “First do not harm.”
