ADVANCE helps incoming freshmen prepare for college life

Sarah McGee |

For incoming freshman at Lipscomb University, college normally doesn’t feel “real” until they attend ADVANCE.

bell_tower_1ADVANCE is a summer orientation program for incoming freshman. This year, the two-day program is offered June 13-14, July 8-9 and Aug. 12-13 for incoming freshmen and their parents during the month of June, July and August. It’s an important program for the students, as well as the parents.

ADVANCE provides students with a way to start interacting with their future peers early on. The students get to meet new people, plan their classes, and participate in fun activities throughout the weekend.

“The most important thing about ADVANCE is the opportunity for all of the freshmen to be able to come on campus and start meeting their future classmates, and to help them get excited about coming to school here in only a few months.” said Johnathan Akin, associate director of admissions.

Akins said all incoming freshmen get a big advantage from the ADVANCE program by being able to take care of things like planning out their classes early in an environment where they can easily get help if it’s needed. ADVANCE is also a great tool in helping new students make friends, making it less intimidating when they actually start school.

New students aren’t the only people who benefit from ADVANCE, though. The parents of the students also are encouraged to attend.

“During the ADVANCE sessions and activities we hope to present a framework for dealing with the significant transitions both parents and students must make during this period of time,” said Sarah Keith Gamble, associate dean of campus life.

Parents will have the opportunity to attend meetings that will discuss important things that they need to know before their child attends, interact with other parents and tour the school.

ADVANCE is a program that everyone takes something away from. Students and parents attending ADVANCE in the next few months will get to have a great experience.
