Kelsi Lewis-Stubblefield |

Lipscomb’s Lifelong Learning program will kick-off its fall 2017 program with a special reception in the Paul Rogers Board Room in Lipscomb’s Ezell Center on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 3:00 p.m. First session classes will officially begin the following Monday, Aug. 28.

Sponsored by Alumni Relations, the Lifelong Learning program offers adults an opportunity to expand their knowledge and explore new ideas in anon-competitive, energetic learning environment, director of the Lifelong Learning program, Amy Hamar, said.

This year's Lifelong Learning program begins its first session on Aug. 28 and ends Oct. 2, and the second session will run Oct. 16 to Nov. 17.

Courses in the first session include:

  • “The Other Side of Sports”
  • “God’s Word for Warriors”
  • “Martin Luther and the 95 Theses: The Protestant Reformation”
  • “The Great American Songbook, Part 2: The Great Craftsmen and Lesser-Known Hit Makers”
  • “Jack and Tollers (C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien): Fellow Witnesses, Bards and ‘Lovers of our Lord.’”

Covering a wide variety of topics, classes this fall explore everything from the ins and outs of the sports business to the most important andinfluential American popular songs and jazz standards from the early 20th century. Classes in the second session analyze the true definition of art, modern American Civics and the life of famous author Edgar Allen Poe.

“Scientific research reveals that keeping, not only physically active, but also mentally active may well be the key to a vibrant and full life as oneages,” Hamar said. “Just as our bodies need exercise to thrive, so do our brains.”

While most participants are of retirement or near-retirement age, the Lifelong Learning program offers a great opportunity for any adults wishing to expand their knowledge in a non-competitive environment. “There are no exams and no grades -- all courses are non-credit and there is no previous educational requirement,” Hamar said.

Instead, Hamar continued, the Lifelong Learning program exists so that participants may learn in an engaging environment that cultivates relationships professors and peers.

Two five-week sessions are offered in both the fall and the spring, and classes typically meet for one and a half hours in the daytime once a week for five weeks.

The cost is $80 per person for each class or $120 to enroll in two or more classes in one session. Some courses may require the purchase of a textbook. All suggested and required textbooks may be purchased in the university bookstore or at registration.
