Lipscomb University’s College of Business will celebrate the opening bell of its new Financial Markets Lab featuring access to the Bloomberg Terminal at 5 p.m.CST on Friday, Nov. 10.

The new lab is located in the Swang Business Administration Center, which houses Lipscomb’s College of Business. The opening bell ceremony is part of the university’s 2017 Homecoming activities, which take place Nov. 9-12.

“As we equip our students with the tools and knowledge to enter a global workforce, having resources such as this new Financial Markets Lab is essential for a business education that prepares students to be successful in their chosen career path,” said Ray Eldridge, dean of Lipscomb’s College of Business. “This lab demonstrates to our students that we are serious about business education. It also provides us with new opportunities to engage with business experts in Nashville.”

The new financial market lab is the result of an extensive renovation of classroom space in the Swang building over the summer. Every student who majors or minors in a business discipline will utilize the lab, which features real-time market tickers, television monitors to view business news outlets and a bank of computer stations for students.

“This Financial Markets Lab will give our students real-time information about what is happening around the world in the markets. It gives them the ability to communicate and learn in very powerful ways,” said Jeff Jewell, professor of business administration.

The service also features execution platforms for every asset class, research and a global network to communicate securely and reliably. Key features of the Bloomberg Terminal include providing students access to news stories as they break, allowing them to follow and interpret market-moving events that professional traders and money managers rely on to stay informed; opportunities to perform historical market analysis, compare different investment strategies, evaluate complex financial instruments and analyze specific companies and industries; and access to real-time and historical data that be monitored, manipulated and analyzed to create the same types of models used by  financial professionals .

Lipscomb’s subscription to the Bloomberg Terminal will serve as a resource for both students and faculty. It will enable students to become familiar with tools used in financial services, reinforcing classroom theory, while faculty may use it to further their own research. Bloomberg is committed to helping universities incorporate this system into academic programs to better prepare students for the global job market.

“The Financial Markets Lab is designed to give our students the feel of what a real Wall Street trading floor is like,” said Brian Masterson, assistant professor of accounting and chair of Lipscomb’s Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics. “Our goal in developing this lab was to create a space particularly for our finance students to have the best tools available to them as they prepare to enter the workforce, but it is a resource that will enhance the educational experience of every business student.”
