Video competition offers full-tuition graduate business scholarship

Education opens doors. And, Lipscomb University’s graduate business program is giving social-minded entrepreneurs a unique opportunity to open a door to enhance their business education while making a difference in the world.

The Lipscomb University College of Business’ graduate business program is offering a full-tuition scholarship, worth up to $44,280, through its Degree of Difference Full Scholarship Video Competition. This is the third year for the competition, which is among the first of its kind at business colleges across the country.

“We want our graduate students to make an impact on the world both in the workplace and in their communities,” said Lisa Shacklett, assistant dean of marketing and enrollment for the College of Business. “Our graduate programs equip students to do just that. This competition is a unique opportunity allowing an individual to earn a degree that gets them one step closer to making that impact.”

Contestants will produce a two-minute video illustrating a compelling personal story about how they are one academic degree away from making a difference in the world, and how a graduate business degree from Lipscomb University will impact their lives and the lives of others.

Last year’s entries were highly reflective of the social enterprise mindset prevalent in the millennial generation. Nonprofits proposed by last year’s contestants included: an organization to improve the quality of life for the aging, enhancing the Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry program and a program to help job seekers. Last year’s scholarship recipient was Greg Kirby, who plans to use his graduate business degree to launch Carpenter’s Square, a facility to serve youth in Nashville’s Woodbine community.

In 2012, MBA student Cory Haney received a scholarship for his video about his dream of founding a nonprofit organization, inspired by a trip to Tiriki, Africa. The video outlined how Haney planned to use a graduate business degree to grow his organization into one that will have a far-reaching impact globally.

“Lipscomb recognizes that one committed, passionate individual can have a significant impact on the world. That’s why we are committed to making a difference for each person who enrolls in the graduate business program at Lipscomb,” said Shacklett.

To enter the video competition, prospective students must apply and be admitted to the graduate business program. Videos may be uploaded at from now until May 15, but students should apply soon in order to allow adequate time to complete the process. All applicants to the program who submit a video will have their application fee waived.

A selection committee will review the videos and select five finalists. The general public will then vote beginning June 10 and ending June 20 to determine the best video. Winners will be asked to produce a three-to-five minute monthly video blog describing their journey as they proceed through the program.

Shacklett said this competition will not only encourage prospective students to think about how a graduate business degree will change their careers and lives, but it will also give them an opportunity to be innovative and use technology that they are using in their professions.
