Greek Life builds relationships, serves community

Part of the fabric of a university’s student life program is its clubs and organizations.

Greek LifeAt Lipscomb University, Greek Life is a vibrant part of campus life that involves more than 20 percent of all undergraduate students and exists to create relationships between students, to develop student leaders, to promote on-campus student involvement and to serve the Nashville community.

“Greek Life is ultimately about relationships that are God-honoring and that will last for many years to come,” said Sam Smith, associate dean of students. “It provides students with leadership training and networking opportunities among many other experiences in addition to enjoying social activities and building traditions. We encourage students to participate in the Greek Life program and to experience all of the benefits it has to offer.”

Lipscomb’s Greek Life program offers 14 social clubs, including seven women’s and seven men’s organizations. Each year, these clubs participate in a variety of activities including

  • leadership training
  • alcohol and drug awareness initiatives
  • rush events
  • anti-hazing education programs
  • residence hall move-in days and alumni events
  • social events (held either on campus or within a 30 mile radius of campus), athletics events, intramural sports and Singarama
  • partnering with a local nonprofit organization for service opportunities
  • service day projects
  • Greek letter Thursdays
  • A Greek-wide dinner
  • Spiritual and leadership retreats
  • And Weekly meetings.

“Our goals this year include involving more students in the Greek Life program and to build a stronger relationship with the Lipscomb community as a whole,” said Smith. “We want to raise awareness of the positive impact Greek Life has on the Lipscomb community.”

Smith said the InterClub Council, under the leadership of president Brennan McNeil of Tau Phi, has played an instrumental role in developing programming for the year and in building a thriving Greek Life program on campus.

Students, faculty and staff will have an opportunity to learn more about Greek Life at Lipscomb Thursday, Jan. 9, during Rush Fair. Activities begin at 5 p.m. in Allen Arena and continue through the women’s basketball game against Kennesaw State at 6 p.m.
