Financial Aid

What types of financial aid are available?
Alternative and Stafford Student loans are available through lending agencies, and application materials are available through the Financial Aid Office. The College of Education also offers a variety of scholarships to in-service and aspiring educators. For more information, visit the Scholarship section of our website.

Indicate interest in graduate assistantship opportunities when you complete your application.

How do I apply for a Stafford loan?
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You cannot get a Stafford loan without it. For a FAFSA in booklet form: Contact the Financial Aid office at 615-966-1791. Give them your mailing address and they will mail a FAFSA along with a loan application to your home. Both the FAFSA and the loan papers need to be filled out in order to receive financial assistance. For a FAFSA online: Go to about a week before you wish to fill out the FAFSA form, and apply for a pin number. Once you have your pin number, go to and fill out the online application. You may ‘sign’ the online application with your pin number. It takes about 4 weeks for the Financial Aid office to receive your FAFSA results. Fill out the Stafford Loan documents and return to the LU Financial Aid office.

When should I apply for financial aid?
The Student Loan process and FAFSA filing takes time to process, so please complete these documents and submit them at least six weeks prior to the start of the semester you are enrolled. This could delay your Stafford Loan if not completed early.
