Biography

Professor John Hutton joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering department in August of 2022. He teaches a range of courses including computer architecture and embedded systems as well as circuits and special topics.

Before joining Lipscomb, Prof Hutton spent 25 years in industry. At Hewlett Packard he worked on HPs RISC Processors in a design and test facility as well as working on the Superdome Enterprise server team. He has experience working across product teams including mechanical, design, firmware, software, testing, and manufacturing. At Microsoft, he utilized these skills working on many generations of Surface products, including the original Surface RT, through the Pro line, and into the Surface Duo and Duo2 products. Focusing on Display and Touch Screen technologies, he worked on PCBA board design up to the OS Software stack to assure display and touch operation designed to delight customers.

Hutton completed his masters in 1997 at Colorado State University. The focus of his research was on simulating noise during volume holographic memory storage. His industry career pushed his PhD completion until 2022. Desiring to teach at the college level, his six-year journey culminated in a dual-Delphi studying the opinions of both academic and industry experts, his dissertation proposed some changes to beginning engineering educational curriculum to enhance the focus on professional skills in these classes to encourage end prepare engineers and computer science majors for future work in industry or academia.

Living in Nashville with his lovely wife, Marlene, he enjoys finding beautiful places to walk, traveling for fun and traveling to see his three grown children, and practicing martial arts.
