The History of the Austin Center

Lipscomb University Sustains the Legacy of Austin Graduate School of Theology

An Enduring Legacy

Since its founding in 1917 as an academic chair for biblical instruction in connection with the University of Texas at Austin, Austin Graduate School of Theology has served churches and communities in central Texas with the mission to promote the knowledge, understanding and practice of the Christian faith by equipping Christians and churches for service in the Kingdom of God.

In fulfillment of this mission, graduates of Austin Grad earned an education that enriched their lives and equipped them to improve the lives of others. With more than 400 alumni who have completed their studies through Austin Graduate School of Theology or its predecessor institutions, the legacy of Austin Grad stands firm in the work of these men and women who have served numerous churches and communities for the glory of God.

A New Partnership

In light of today’s challenging higher education environment, the Austin Graduate School of Theology Board of Trustees wisely sought a partner to continue the school’s mission. Lipscomb University is honored to be considered a worthy partner for the Christian theological education mission of Austin Graduate School of Theology and humbly seeks to continue its legacy as well as its service to the Body of Christ.

To further its reach and expand its degree offerings, Austin Graduate School of Theology is becoming a part of Lipscomb University, a private, Christian liberal arts institution founded in 1891 and located in Nashville, Tennessee. As a Church of Christ-affiliated university with an enrollment of nearly 4,900 students, Lipscomb carries out its mission by developing students whose academic excellence, faith and practice prepare them for lives of meaning and purpose.

Through this partnership creating the Lipscomb University Austin Center, Lipscomb will continue the good work of Austin Grad, building on its mission and sustaining its legacy to educate students in a Christ-centered environment and prepare them to shape their communities and influence others to live more fully. This partnership will also substantially broaden that work, igniting and energizing the work of Austin Grad to sustain its influence well into the future.

An Established Partner

For 130 years, Lipscomb University has focused on providing students with a wide breadth of practical teachings and skills alongside biblical studies and opportunities for spiritual growth. Its founders, David Lipscomb and James A. Harding, two leaders of the Restoration Movement, believed in a broad general education. But more than any skill, they believed that at the center of a well-rounded education was a deep faith and grounding in the Bible.

Today, Lipscomb is a nationally recognized institution, classified as a doctoral university by the Carnegie Foundation, which places the university among the top 7% of schools nationwide. With an enrollment of nearly 4,900 students, Lipscomb boasts the second largest undergraduate student population among Church of Christ-affiliated institutions and the third largest graduate student population among private schools in Tennessee. Lipscomb’s programs of study attract a variety of students and have garnered notable accolades for academic rigor and financial value from College Choice, Poets & Quants, Colleges of Distinction, Kiplinger’s Best Values and more.

Lipscomb graduates lead in government, science, the arts, technology, classroom education, medicine, public service and more. And the most popular academic areas of study at Lipscomb happen to be the most practical and useful to society, including engineering, education, health care and business. Students find grounding in both academic knowledge and deep spiritual understanding, fulfilling the vision of our founders from the start.

Christian faith is not only our foundation—it’s our purpose and our future.
