Lipscomb University's comprehensive plan to return to campus.Learn More
Take advantage of all that Lipscomb has to offer and master the English language at the college level.
At Lipscomb, we provide all students with the support needed to excel and become fully immersed in our campus life. For some students, that means being given opportunities to develop English language skills at the university level.
The mission of Lipscomb’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is to equip students with the language skills necessary to be successful in higher education and academic settings through full participation in English courses and campus life. By developing a stronger command of the English language, you will be more equipped to engage in academic conversations, take notes from lectures, write essays, participate in research, and engage with the campus community. Invest in your development in order to succeed in college and beyond.
Our English classes are held on our main campus, just minutes from the heart of Nashville, Tennessee. Often called Music City, USA, the city has a population near 2 million and is growing rapidly. Learn more about Nashville.
University coursework demands a high level of English. This involves developing a strong command of the English language not only for general communication, but for academic conversations, taking notes in class, writing papers, and researching projects. The English for Academic Purposes program provides students an opportunity to learn and improve the academic language necessary in higher education. Learn more about our program, its requirements, and how it will best prepare you for your academic future at Lipscomb University.
Lipscomb’s EAP program seeks to ensure Lipscomb University is an environment where meaningful cultural dialogue can take place in safe, respectful, equitable and honest ways while transforming the lives of all students. The EAP program is offered for full-time and part-time students.
If you are an international student whose first language is not English, Lipscomb’s full-time intensive English program will prepare you with the skills needed to excel in rigorous academics and participate in our vibrant campus life. Through our EAP program, you will have the opportunity to engage in local, curricular activities and take a set amount of intermediate to advanced level English courses to sharpen and improve your skills for your undergraduate studies and life after graduation.
Students who are already living and/or working in the U.S., or who hold a valid visa, may opt to take Lipscomb’s EAP courses on a part-time basis. These classes are also available for current Lipscomb students whose first language is not English. Take daytime or evening courses throughout the week to refine your language skills in order to ultimately achieve your academic and professional goals. Our courses come in a variety of levels to meet your specific and unique needs.
Students enrolled in EAP participate on a full-time and are in a non-degree, certificate program. Upon completion of the full-time program requirements, the university will issue a Certificate in English for Academic Purposes.
Requirements for the certificate program include: current and valid passport, visa or I-20; adherence to Lipscomb’s academic policies; maintenance of a grade of “C” or better in all courses; full-time participation for one semester and up to four semesters; achievement of TOEFL or IELTS score that meets current admission requirements; and submission of Intent to Complete form.
