School of Dance
Due to demand from parents and the community, Lipscomb Academy established the School of Dance in the 2018-19 school year to provide convenient after-school dance instruction by dance professors, professionals and choreographers. Highly qualified instructors will guide students as they learn the technique and artistry of dance as well as performance and storytelling. The dance school is an exciting new opportunity for our students to grow in their talents, infuse dance into the arts community at Lipscomb Academy and to glorify God by telling truthful stories through dance.
Classes in ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, modern and musical theater will be offered this year with offerings at every grade level.
The School of Dance is directed by Kari Smith, Lipscomb Academy’s high school theater director and a theater and dance instructor at Lipscomb University and co-director of the university’s Foundation Dance Theatre and annual dance concert Elevate. Smith has been the co-director of the Nashville High School Musical Theatre Awards, the Spotlight Awards, for five years at. Smith teaches many of the courses, along with Maggie Pelton, a Juilliard graduate and a former member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre; Elise Hagen, a professional dancer based in New York City for some years; and Laurel Walker, currently teaching dance technique at Middle Tennessee State University and choreographing for Vanderbilt and Lipscomb University.
Dance Showcase: May 5, 2020 (Shamblin)
