McDonald brings a wealth of recognition in research and teaching to the classroom. He was awarded the Military Operations Research Journal award in 2012 for the best paper submitted in 2011-2012 and placed first in the Transportation Research Board’s 2004 International Competition in Long Term Pavement Performance Data Analysis. He was awarded the following fellowships: ASCE Excellence in Civil Engineering Education Teaching Fellowship (2011), the Dwight D. Eisenhower Graduate Fellowship in Transportation Engineering (2004-2008) and was named the NSF IGERT fellow in Reliability and Risk Engineering at Vanderbilt University (2005-2008).
