Healthy Lifestyle Spotlight: Larry Cochran!
-What are your fitness/exercise goals for this year? *My fitness goal was to walk 2 miles a day but since participating in Walktober, I have changed my goal to 10,000 steps a day. -What are your nutrition goals for this year? *My nutrition goal is to eat more fruits and vegetables and a lot less sweets. -How do you plan to achieve both of those goals? *Focus on good habits. I park at the High School football field every day and walk to campus. This is a habit that I started two years ago when we were asked to park at the football field and ride the shuttle during construction projects. I walked instead of riding the shuttle. -Any favorite activities that you do to stay healthy? *I like to walk and ride a bike. -What motivates you to get healthy/stay healthy? *The doctor! Seriously, I don’t like to take medicine unless absolutely necessary. When I was diagnosed with high blood sugar, that motivated (and still motivates) me to be more healthy through what (and how much) I eat and exercise. I was able to reduce my blood sugar level through eating and exercise and without medicine. Another big motivator is the grandchildren. I now have two grandchildren that I look forward to being around and living long enough to watch grow up. Anyone with grandchildren knows what I mean! -What sort of advice might you give someone to help them stay motivated to get healthy and fit? *Exercise and watch what you eat – both in quality and quantity. When eating out, don’t think you have to eat the whole meal. Stop when you feel full. We tend to eat past being full and that causes weight gain. -Any other thoughts on the subject you might have? *“Listen” to your body, eat the right foods, eat the right quantities, get enough sleep and exercise. I learned the hard way. I don’t think any of this is rocket science, just using the common sense God gave us.
