The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act 2008

The Post-9/11 GI Bill is an education benefit program for individuals who served on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, and is administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Based on your length of service, you may be eligible to receive the cost of tuition and fees, not to exceed the most expensive in-state institution of higher education (paid to the university).

As of August 1, 2011, private and foreign school costs are capped at $17,500 annually and are prorated based on eligibility tiers (40%-100%) for veterans, active duty and their transferees.

You are also entitled to a percentage of

  • Monthly housing allowance equal to the basic allowance for housing payable to a military E-5 with dependents, in the same zip code as your school (paid to you);
  • Yearly book and supplies stipend of up to $1,000 per year (paid to you); and
  • A one-time payment of $500 paid to certain individuals relocating from highly rural areas.
