Lipscomb University and Nissan Engineering and Robotics Camps

For every kid who just can’t resist dismantling the toaster, the Lipscomb University/Nissan BisonBot Robotic Summer Camps will be the highlight of their summer. During the last week of May and entire month of June, 2012, Lipscomb will offer five one-week robotics camps. All camps will be held in the new Hughes Center engineering facility on the Lipscomb campus.

Junior BisonBots Camp
Designed for students' first exposure to a robotics experience

Ages: 8-11 (completed 2nd grade)
Session Cost: $250 (snacks included)
Session 1
May 29June 1, 2012  9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Session 2
June 5–June 8, 2012      9:00 am – 1:00 pm

This half-day, week-long camp introduces campers age 8-11 to basic mechanics, electricity, and robotics concepts through a variety of in-class and studio-based exercises. With an emphasis on hands-on learning, a variety of activities are used to introduce the children to concepts such as electrons and current flow, simple DC circuits, motors, axles, and wheels, and the application of these concepts to robotics. The week culminates in a show-and-tell session for friends and parents where campers explain what they've learned throughout the week and demonstrate various projects they've created. Two sessions of this very popular camp will be offered this summer. Each session covers the same material so students should select only one session to attend.

Fundamentals BisonBot Robotic Camp
Designed for budding roboteers with little or no experience in robotics

Ages: 10-14 (completed 4th grade)
Session Cost: $400 (snacks and lunch included)
Session 1
June 1115, 2012  9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Session 2
June 1822, 2012  9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Campers age 10-14 (completed 4th grade) learn basic robotic principles involving electrical circuits, batteries, switches, DC motors, and robotic arm- and hand actuators. They build their own challenging six-degree-of-freedom robotic arm, and even learn how to solder! Fundamentals camp concludes with a robotic competition and reception open to family and friends. Two sessions of this very popular camp will be offered this summer. Each session covers the same material so students should select only one session to attend.

Advanced BisonBot Robotic Camp
Designed for students with some previous robot experience

Ages: 12 and older (completed 6th grade)
Session Cost: $500 (snacks and lunch included)
Session 1
June 2529, 2012   9:00 am – 3:00 pm

This camp is for students age 12 and above (completed 6th grade) with some robot experience (previous attendance in a robotics camp, participation on a robotics team, etc.) and will extend their knowledge in mechanical and electrical principles, wireless communication, and will provide them with opportunities to learn and apply various robot design and construction techniques. Advanced camp concludes with a reception and head-to-head robot competition involving robots of the camper’s own design and construction. The reception and competition is open to family and friends.

Application, Academic Scholarships, and Financial Aid

Application Deadline: March 15, 2012

Regardless of the selected camp, all applicants will be considered for academic scholarships. Camp applications must be accompanied by at least one letter of recommendation (non-parent) and a copy of the student’s most recent semester grades in math and science.  Additionally, financial aid will be available to qualified students (to be considered for financial aid, additional materials are required—see the application for details). No before- or after-camp care will be available. Early application is strongly encouraged as acceptances are granted to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis, and camps fill quickly.

BEST Competition

In the fall semester, the Raymond B. Jones College of Engineering and Nissan host Music City BEST, an annual robotics competition that is part of the nation-wide Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology (BEST) Competition. Middle and high school students from across the region design and build a robot to compete with robots from other schools in performing both simple and complex tasks as specified by BEST. If you would like more information on how your school can participate in Music City BEST, contact the College of Engineering at 615.966.6244. You can also learn more by visiting the BEST Competition website. The Best Competition occurs in the fall.
