How many SALT credits am I required to earn before graduation?

All incoming students (freshmen and transfers) who entered Lipscomb this fall with less than 95 hours are required to complete two service-learning experiences before graduation through the SALT Program. Read below for more information on available SALT opportunities. No more than one experience can come from Tier I, and at least one experience must come from Tier II or III.

Students who transferred in with 95 hours or more are required to complete one service-learning experience before graduation from Tier II or III.

How can I earn a SALT Tier I credit?

You can earn a SALT Tier I credit by participating in a SALT enhanced service day. (look for more announcements about the spring service day with SALT opportunities)

Can I receive SALT credit for a service-learning course I completed at another university?

Students who completed service-learning courses at other universities may transfer in up to one service-learning credit.

Does the service work that I did during QUEST week count as a Tier I SALT credit?

Yes. If you are a freshman this year and you participated in the service experience during QUEST week, you will receive SALT Tier I credit. The Registrar's Office has already recorded the Tier I credit. You should receive an email letting you know that your record has been updated.

Am I supposed to fill out a form to receive credit for any SALT experience I participate in?

No forms are required to receive credit for your SALT experiences. All SALT experiences are recorded as courses through Banner/ DAR. This includes SALT service during QUEST week and SALT Mission Trips. Each SALT experience has its own record keeping method (i.e. sign in sheet for SALT during QUEST, a letter grade for a SALT course), and the SALT Program keeps track of this information through the registrar's office.

Am I only allowed to participate in Lipscomb "sponsored" SALT experiences?

Students are encouraged, but not required to participate in Lipscomb "sponsored" SALT experiences. The benefit of participating in one of these experiences is that that are already established, and most of the leg work is already done for you.

If you have a particular service project or long standing commitment with a nonprofit agency, you are welcome to contact the SALT Center regarding an independent study-type SALT experience for SALT credit. However, we encourage you to participate in university planned experiences whenever possible.

The following are types of SALT experiences:

Tier I - SALT service day
Tier II - SALT course
Tier III - SALT internship, cooperative (independent study), mission trip
Tier IV - SALT capstone (program approval required - SALT Scholars only)
