Personal Safety
Things to do to stay safe:
- Always be aware of people and things around you especially if walking to/from your vehicle or dorm.
- Walk with a buddy (especially at night) or call 966-7600 for a security escort (Bison Walk Program)
- Avoid poorly lit and densely populated areas such as alleys
- Do not let strangers in to your residence
- Do not give rides to strangers
- Do not give money to panhandlers
- Report suspicious activity immediately
Consider These Things Now before a disaster:
- Find out where the nearest two or three shelters are likely to be located. (Allen Arena, High School Gym, etc.)
- Discuss your planning with friends/roommates/local family members.
- Identify alternate meeting places in case of separation.
- Alert out-of-area family members of your plans.
- Make arrangements for special needs.
- Store sufficient personal survival supplies (medications, toiletry items, clothing, etc)
- Store supplies to sustain you during relocation (see suggested list on this page).
After a Disaster:
- Locate any missing friend/roommate/family member.
- Advise out-of-area family contact of your status.
- Use safety glasses, leather gloves, etc., when working.
- Exercise extreme caution when exiting damaged buildings.
- Exercise extreme care with fire.
- Avoid electrical appliances where there is water.
- Stay away from power lines.
- Check water and food before consumption.
- Monitor and obey directives from government and campus officials.
- For residential students: contact the University if you are not at a campus-operated shelter.
- If you have telephone service, use it only for emergencies.
Suggested items for Relocation:
- Bedding
- Flashlights
- Batteries
- Toiletries
- Games, Books
- Medications
- Special dietary foods
- Valuable papers
- Treasured photographs
- Telephone Lists
- Photo ID with home address/University ID
- Pens and paper
- Personal hygiene supplies (e.g., toothbrush, soap, insect repellent, sunscreen)
Do NOT Bring to Relocation Shelter:
- Alcohol, drugs, firearms
- Candles
- Heating devices
- Beds or furniture
- Excessive cash, jewelry, financial papers
Relocation of Persons with Disabilities
In the event of an emergency, individuals who use wheelchairs and other individuals with disabilities should observe the following procedures:

- Move toward the nearest marked exit.
- As a first choice, use the building elevator, BUT NEVER IN THE CASE OF FIRE OR EARTHQUAKE.
- If there is a fire or an earthquake - - or if there is an obstruction in the pathway - - request assistance from others in the area.
- If assistance is not immediately available, stay in the exit corridor or the stairway landing. Continue to call for help until rescued. Individuals who cannot speak loudly should carry a whistle or have other means for attracting the attention of others.
- Rescue personnel, Public Safety, Emergency Response Teams, Fire and Police Departments will first check all exit corridors and exit stairwells for trapped persons.
- If you use a wheelchair, or have any other mobility or physical impairment, please register and file a Class Schedule with Disability Services (extension 5737, Elam 208-B).
NOTE: It is suggested that individuals who use wheelchairs or have a mobility impairment prepare for an emergency ahead of time by instructing faculty/staff or classmates on how to assist him/her in an emergency.
