Competency-based assessment and learning provides an opportunity for attributes such as life and professional experiences, as well as personal and behavioral skills, to be evaluated for performance goals, or a variety of other initiatives, programs and outcomes.
High-level view of competencies
A competency is a specific set of behaviors associated with exceptional performance.
Every workplace role is at the simplest level a collection of competencies. Every role has a unique competency combination. Every role requires different levels of competence. The focus is on what's needed to be successful in that role.
In addition, every academic major or program has a unique competency combination. Some competencies apply to everyone, the focus is on the knowledge, skill, ability and attitude the person with that major or degree should possess. This is a shift from course completion to competence achievement.

An Assessment Center is not a physical place but involves multiple trained assessors for consistency and reliability. Demonstrated behaviors are assessed through simulations and other activities.
