Lipscomb Universtiy College of Pharmacy (LUCOP) American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) is committed to educating and empowering the community, both on campus as well as the larger Nashville community. The Generation Rx Committee teamed up with Operation Diabetes and Operation Heart to set up a health fair at an Overton High School men’s and women’s basketball game. The purpose of the health fair was to bring awareness to prescription drug abuse, educate about diabetes and heart health and promote healthy lifestyle choices. Eleven student pharmacists participated in the event and interacted with many high school students and parents. Each committee had a small booth set up with posters and informational material to hand out. Operation Diabetes checked blood glucose levels and educated people about diet, exercise and diabetes. Operation Heart took blood pressure readings and educated people about the results and how to keep their hearts healthy. Generation Rx had a “roulette” type of game set up that only the high school students got to participate in. The purpose of the game was to show consequences of prescription drug abuse and at the end of the game students participated in a short 10-question quiz testing their knowledge about prescription drugs. The Generation Rx members discussed the quiz answers with the students and educated them more about the dangers of drug abuse. Overall, the event had a positive effect on the Overton High School community and future events are in the planning.
