You just finished your final final of the Fall semester, now what?
How do you make the most of your holiday break so you can decompress from school but not waste all of your free time either? Lucky for you...we have some expert-tested advice that three out of four pharmacy school admissions representatives recommend. Nobody really trusts that fourth admissions representative anyway so you should check this out!
Rule 1: Get home or wherever you will be spending your holiday break safely.
A wise friend gave me this advice today, "bottom line is you need to arrive alive" for the holiday break. Be safe driving home, take breaks and buy coffee to make sure you are fully awake. Please do not text and drive. You can finish your pharmacy school application when you get home, do not try to do it while driving.
Rule 2: Bask in the celebration of your arrival home with your family.
Rule 3: Strategically stack-rank the friends you have-to/want-to see and make a plan to see them.
This one is mostly meant to be funny, but there is a theme here of spending your time wisely and sometimes that means you need to plan your time with friends. There are also other times you plan to hang out for an hour and then next thing you know six hours have gone by because you have amazing friends. Enjoy your friends and encourage them to get their PharmCAS applications completed if they haven't already.
Rule 4: Have a game plan when you sit down and open up Netflix, nothing is worse than spending 30 minutes trying to find a show to watch.
Do I really need to add anything to this? Netflix is an incredible resource to help you decompress and get caught up on pop culture, however you have to follow rule 5.
There is a reason this rule is larger than the others, it's because this is one of the best time opportunities for you to get your application completed. Your top choices cannot consider you until you have completed your application and PharmCAS has verified your application. It would be very easy to binge watch Netflix all day and relax, but there is a reason it asks you if you are still watching after a few episodes. The reason is to make you feel guilty if you haven't completed your PharmCAS application yet...true story. Seriously though, go ahead and get your application done.
Rule 6: Make sure your grades from the Fall are being sent to PharmCAS for an academic update.
We need these grades to be sent to PharmCAS so they can be updated in the system. Students having their grades updated gives us a better opportunity to make decisions on inviting students to interview.
Rule 7: Consider going to an open house event at the pharmacy school you are considering.
These are absolutely incredible opportunities to check out the pharmacy schools you are interested in. I know for ours it is one of the most intensive days where you get to meet with several faculty members, interact with and ask questions of a student panel, get a behind the scenes tour of the program, and eat an excellent lunch. We pride ourselves on a lot of different things in our program, eating incredible food is no exception.
Rule 8: Sign up for the February PCAT on December 19th if you need to retake the test.
- February 2017 Administration
- Testing Window: 2/1/2017-2/14/2017
- Registration and Scheduling Opens: 12/19/2016
- Registration and Scheduling Deadline: 1/18/2017
- Late Registration and Scheduling Deadline: 1/25/2017
- Cancellation Deadline: 1/27/2017
Bottom line, we hope you have an amazing holiday break but also take time to get your PharmCAS applications completed. Please check out some of our prior blog posts about how to prepare for pharmacy school.
