2011 Dean’s Year in Review

The “First Day We Pray” breakfast brought together practitioners from our community, faculty, staff, and student pharmacists to start the academic year in a special way.
Leaders from the College’s Department of Pharmacy Practice, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and School of Nursing, Belmont University School of Pharmacy, and Tennessee State University School of Social Work designed a pilot program in interprofessional education called the “Vanderbilt Program for Interprofessional Learning” (VPIL). Four Lipscomb P-1 student pharmacists are participating.
Dr. Andrew Coop, professor and chair of the pharmaceutical sciences department at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, was the keynote speaker at the 2nd annual Pharmacy Research Day. Eleven student pharmacists participated by presenting posters from the 2010 Pharmaceutical Sciences Summer Research Program. Three faculty members also presented posters highlighting curricular innovation in the Integrated Biomedical Science Laboratory.
The inaugural Golf SLAM took place at Hillwood Country Club. The event resulted in $30,000 raised for support of outreach programs incorporating Service Learning And Missions.
More than 100 student pharmacists and 25 faculty and staff donated 281 hours of service to our community at Radnor Lake, Nashville Rescue Mission, Nashville Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Mobile Medical Disaster Relief, Monroe Harding Children’s Home, and Nashville Humane Society through Lipscomb’s annual Service Day.
Two student pharmacists served for six weeks in Zambia, Africa, providing healthcare services to over 16,000 patients with Frist Global Health Leaders.
Twenty five student pharmacists along with faculty and staff of the College traveled to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, for five days to deliver medication to those in need and also build a home for a family.
Two student pharmacists participated in medical missions in Guatemala.
Two student pharmacists participated with Medical Mobile Disaster Relief in Haiti.
100% of the College faculty and staff contributed to the Faculty and Staff Student Scholarship yielding a 27% increase over last year.
Generous donors endowed two more student pharmacist scholarships for a total of ten fully endowed scholarships.
An endowed scholarship was established for student pharmacists seeking a career in community pharmacy through a partnership with AmerisourceBergen Corporation.
Student pharmacists conducted a “Drug Disposal Event” in partnership with faculty and student nurses from the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. 41,577 dosage forms were collected and destroyed.
Two faculty members were selected to participate in Lipscomb’s iTeach program exploring uses of the iPad in teaching and learning.

Faculty honors and Accomplishments:
New faculty: Dr. Beth Breeden, Dr. Kevin Eidson,
Dr. Crescent Rowell, and Dr. Sarah Uroza.
Dr. Tom Campbell, associate dean for academic affairs, received an award for Outstanding Service as 2009-2010 Tennessee Pharmacists Association President and the McKesson Service Award in recognition of service as President of TPA 2009-10. Dr. Campbell also received an Award of Merit.
Dr. Zac Cox, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, achieved the Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist Certification.
Dr. Mike Fowler, vice chair of pharmaceutical sciences, received an academic promotion to professor of pharmaceutical sciences.
Dr. Jeff McCormack, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences and director of development, was awarded a research grant from Baptist Healing Trust for $35,000 to continue developing curriculum that addresses the need for healthcare professionals to be caring and compassionate individuals. He also received a $10,000 grant from Hope through Healing Hands to support two student pharmacists to serve on medical missions in Zambia.
Dr. Susan Mercer, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences,
was elected to serve on the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Drug Design and Discovery Section as the Secretary/ Treasurer for a two year appointment.
Dr. Kam Nola, vice chair, department of pharmacy practice, and
associate professor of pharmacy practice, was appointed to the
American College of Rheumatology Committee on Government Affairs. She was also elected to the American College of Rheumatology/ Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals executive committee 2009-2010. In addition, she served on the AMCP/APhA Build the Bridge to Partnership Advisory Board and collaborated in the development of the continuing education article “Building the bridge to partnership: Fostering the community and managed care pharmacy relationship.” She also was elected to serve as a board member for the Arthritis Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
Dr. James Torr was promoted to assistant professor
of pharmacy practice. He was also elected Chair
of the Tennessee Society of Pharmacists (TSP).
Dr. Joe Deweese, assistant professor of
pharmaceutical sciences, authored publications
for Metallomics and Nature.
