Types of Rotations
We have an MNT therapy focus, working in both clinical and community settings. There are about 38 weeks of rotations at Nashville area hospitals (some an hour drive away), community settings, outpatient DM and Renal centers, eating disorders, and Metro Schools. We cover the general rotations of cardiac, diabetes, renal, nutrition support, bariatrics, out-pt DM, NICU (if available), foodservice and staff relief in the hospital settings (approximately 19 weeks).
Baptist Hospital, St. Thomas Hospital, VA Nashville, Southern Hills, Williamson Medical, Maury Regional (Columbia), Gateway (Clarksville), Middle Tennessee Medical Center (Murfreesboro), Centennial Bariatrics, Davita Renal Clinics, Woodcrest at Blakeford (longterm care), YMCA, Metro Schools, WIC/Public Health, Renfrew Eating Disorder Clinic, Second Harvest Food Bank, and H.E.R.O.
Determination of hospital placement will be made shortly after matching in April so that interns can be notified in adequate time to find living arrangements nearest their main hospital. Interns get 1 week at Thanksgiving and 1 week at Christmas off unless failed rotation or extended absences require time to be made up. Some weekend involvement may be required throughout the program year.
3 graduate credits are required as part of the internship program. Currently the classes taken are strictly for the interns relating to MNT, research and special topics and take place within the first several weeks of August as well as one full day a month thereafter.
Interns are responsible for coming to the internship in August having studied provided materials and prepared to be tested over MNT and nutrition topics. Interns must be 80% proficient prior to beginning their clinical and community rotations. A personal computer and printer are necessary.
Because of the fluctuating daily schedules required for different rotations throughout the program year, any outside employment should not interfere with the expected work hours of the individual rotations. Interns are expected to keep the same hours of his or her precepting RD.
Private Loan institutions may be contacted for financial aid. In addition, if an intern is seeking a degree in EXNS (our Exercise and Nutrition Science Masters) and enrolls in 6 graduate hours per semester during the internship program, he or she may seek financial aid through the University.
