Legendary musician Charlie Daniels hosted a special free concert Tuesday as part of the iostudio Charlie Daniels’ Scholarship for Heroes event.

Performances by Daniels along with Chris Young, The Grascals, Keni Thomas, Bleach and surprise special guests Lee Greenwood and Jason Aldean were on the program in Lipscomb’s Allen Arena. Also, Mary Byers, president of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., was honored for her work during the concert.

Daniels will be touring the country in 2013, creating greater awareness of the national Veterans Yellow Ribbon education program. Lipscomb’s participation in the Yellow Ribbon Enhancement Program offers eligible Post 9/11 GI Bill veterans and their family members an undergraduate degree tuition-free or a graduate degree either tuition-free or at a greatly reduced tuition rate.

"We have so many heroes whose needs fly below our radar. This shouldn’t be happening and this event is helping to make sure it doesn't,” said Daniels.

Members of the military and their families will be invited as guests of the event’s corporate sponsors. Proceeds from the event benefitted Lipscomb University’s Charlie Daniels Scholarship for Heroes Fund.

Daniels was joined by some of music’s hottest artists. Young’s single, “You,” marked his fifth consecutive No. 1 hit. Grammy-nominated group, The Grascals, have become one of the most acclaimed bands on today’s bluegrass scene for their innovative mingling of bluegrass and country music. Nashville singer, songwriter and best-selling author Keni Thomas is a combat veteran of the 75th Ranger Regiment who fought in the Battle of Mogadishu. Bleach is a contemporary Christian rock band that has earned a Dove Award and has released seven albums since the band formed in 1995. Aldean has recorded for Broken Bow Records since 2005, releasing five albums and sixteen singles. Greenwood performed his hit song that has become a patriotic anthem, "God Bless the U.S.A.."

American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., founded in 1929, is an organization of mothers who have lost sons or daughters in service to the United States. The organization exists to support mothers who have lost loved ones, to promote patriotism and to perpetuate the memory of those who have died in service to the country among other purposes.

In addition, Chase and Operation Homefront gave away a home the night of the show to an area Tennessee veteran.

Free tickets to the Tuesday show were made available through the generosity of the event sponsors including iostudio, Humana, Waltrip Brothers’ Charity Championship, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Twice Daily, Bridgestone, Chase, Operation Homefront, Clear Channel, Dollywood, Shofner Vision Center, Trauger & Tuke, Glover Group Entertainment, SunTrust and DSI.
