Students thank employee donors on National Philanthropy Day

Lipscomb University students have many reasons for which to be thankful, and on Nov. 15 they stopped and said “thank you” to some of those closest to them as part of National Philanthropy Day® activities on campus.

student crowdsLed by the Student Alumni Philanthropy Council (SAPC), Lipscomb students thanked employees for their participation in this year’s Family Campaign, “Because We Are Blessed…,” which concluded in September. On Thursday, Nov. 15, National Philanthropy Day®, students delivered candy grams and words of appreciation to those who participated in the Family Campaign.

“As a part of our celebration of National Philanthropy Day®, we wanted to recognize our faculty and staff and say ‘Thank you’ to them in our own special way for what they do for students. Their support of this year’s Family Campaign was amazing and we, as students, are blessed by their generosity,” said Whitney Holland, Nashville junior and SAPC president.

Sponsored by the Office of Development & Alumni Relations, SAPC serves as a liaison to facilitate an active relationship between students and alumni. It advances unity within the university community by promoting activities and programs to preserve traditions that strengthen lifelong loyalty to the university. National Philanthropy Day® is one of the organization’s annual activities to increase awareness and celebrate those who support Lipscomb. National Philanthropy Day® is celebrated nationally each November to pay tribute to those who give of their time, talent and treasure to enhance and improve the quality of life in our communities and our world.

And, the Lipscomb community has great reason to celebrate this year as more than 97 percent of Lipscomb employees designated a portion of their charitable contribution through the 2012 Family Campaign to the Lipscomb Fund. Sixty-three departments had 100 percent of its employees give to the Family Campaign.

“I believe the percentage of giving is so high among employees for several reasons: faculty and staff believe in the mission of Lipscomb and the future of our students. We understand and appreciate the value of a Christian education,” said Sonja Hayes, director of the parents’ program and assistant director of special campaigns. “When Lipscomb employees make a financial contribution to the university it sends a powerful message about their faith in and commitment to the university. Alumni, friends, corporations and foundations take note when our faculty and staff - those who know the institution best - endorse and financially support its operations.”

The Lipscomb Fund provides critical unrestricted dollars to support academics, student services, scholarships, campus enhancement, technology and institutional support, supplements the university budget and helps provide programs and services that the university budget cannot completely cover. Within the last couple of years, the university has been able to complete several projects because of gifts to the Lipscomb Fund, Hayes said. The renovation of Fanning Hall, refurbishing the wireless network, improving food offerings, building the intramural field and even reaching out to the Nashville community during the floods are just a few examples of how those funds have been used.
