Lipscomb University’s Foundation Dance Theatre is shaking up theater season with its annual spring dance concert, Elevate, which features students telling stories through movement and various types of dance. This year’s show titled, “Still I Rise,” opens Wednesday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Shamblin Theatre and runs through Friday, March 10.

Elevate features 35 members of Lipscomb dance classes who are dance minors, musical theater majors or students from other majors in the dance company with extensive dance backgrounds.

Ticket prices are $17 for adults, $12 for university faculty/staff and $5 for students. For tickets, contact the Lipscomb Box Office at 615.966.7075.

Directed by Kari Smith and Leigh Anne Ervin, adjunct professors and co-founders of the Foundation Dance Theatre, the pair have worked together all year with students as well as a few other guest choreographers to perfect this year’s show.

“We are excited to see the fruits of our labor,” said Smith. “I really love creating dance shows from scratch because Leigh Anne and I can choose the theme and really make the show come to life based on our passions and our own inspirations. I think that audiences will love the show because it has something for everyone.”

Each piece showcases dance styles including: ballet, jazz, musical theater, hip hop, modern, lyrical, contemporary and tap. There are also a few comedic pieces, some that are fierce and even some that are heavy. Each piece represents some aspect of the show title Elevate and the subtitle Still I Rise, said Smith.

Foundation Dance Theatre is Lipscomb’s resident dance company that expands the training of Lipscomb students interested in performing dance. FDT hosts auditions every semester for those interested, and all interested may apply.
