On Nov. 14, the Lipscomb community celebrated the completion of another phase of improvements to the facility that serves as a hub for wellness and exercise activities on campus.

The latest additions to the SAC include a stretch area, lockers, a wellness consultation office, water bottle filling station, restrooms, shower areas and locker rooms.

“It is astonishing to see developments all over campus.  I enjoy hearing the excitement in conversations I have with students and alumni on the improvements of the Student Activities Center,” said Matthew Abplanalp, director of campus recreation. “With this renovation, we are able to more efficiently utilize our space and to create a better flow to the area.”

Abplanalp said Lipscomb’s Student Government Association played a key role in funding the project.

“We could not have been where we are today without their financial commitment to this program,” he said. “We greatly appreciate their support.”

SGA President Andrew Hunt said helping improve the SAC was a priority for the organization.

“Out of all the buildings on campus this is one of the most student-focused,” he said. “It is very important for our students to have good facilities to use, and this is one way we can have a direct impact on the health and welfare of our students.”

Providing quality wellness and exercise facilities and programs is a top priority for Scott McDowell, senior vice president for student life.

“The SAC facilitates a healthy lifestyle,” said McDowell. “It’s a place that brings students together. We take a holistic approach to student life, and the physical welfare of our students is an important part of that. And, there is certainly a faith dimension to taking care of our bodies. We want to provide a positive, powerful experience in the SAC. These continued improvements help us do just that.”

McDowell said more upgrades are planned for the future, including transforming the old restroom facilities for additional training and office space.

The SAC opened in 1991. In addition to the latest upgrades, the SAC includes four racquetball courts, two basketball courts, an indoor track, a spinning studio, a weight room, a group fitness studio, a performance studio and a lounge. A variety of classes, wellness programs, outdoor trips, intramural sports and other activities are offered to students, employees and the community.
