College of Education launches new Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree

Classes to begin this summer; four majors offered
Lipscomb University’s College of Education is launching a new offering for educators — the Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree, featuring four major areas of study.
The university is offering a 20 percent discount for full-time educators and alumni who enroll in the program. Classes begin this summer and are offered in the evening, weekends and online. The Ed.S. may be completed in less than two years.
“The primary goals of an education specialist degree are to increase teaching expertise and to help students acquire professional proficiency in an area,” said Candice McQueen, dean of the College of Education. “In most education settings, an Ed.S. degree indicates that the individual is a content specialist who can also teach that content in various settings. This program is a natural outgrowth of our strong master of education and doctorate of education programs.”
An Ed.S. degree is considered preparation for many school district-level and undergraduate college-level teaching opportunities. Lipscomb’s program is designed so that the core Ed.S. degree courses align with the core courses required for the advanced Master of Education (M.Ed.) degrees offered by the college in the areas of leadership and educational research. It is also designed so students can easily build on several of Lipscomb’s M.Ed. programs. Students who complete the Ed.S. program may also apply up to 15 credit hours earned to the university’s doctorate in education degree.
In addition to core leadership and research courses, the Ed.S. program requirements include educational specialist courses along with major-specific courses and the completion of a professional learning project in the student’s specialty that will be delivered in a digital or web-based format to an academic and professional audience.
The program offers majors in:
- Educational Leadership. Offered in conjunction with the Ayers Institute for Teacher Learning and Innovation, this program is designed to develop successful educational leaders at the school, district or state level. Program participants will follow innovative strands of leadership competencies on their way to earning an Educational Specialist degree and may earn a Tennessee Instructional Leadership License (ILL-B).
- Collaborative Professional Learning. This 33-credit-hour program provides students with skills to be leaders of professional learning and instructional coaches in collaborative learning environments at the school or district level. Courses will help the student understand the learning styles and diverse needs of teachers, models and methods of coaching and presenting to adults, and leadership in setting up collaborative learning practices in an organization.
- English Language Learning. Designed for licensed teachers, this program focuses on culture and community in the classroom for non-native speakers and emphasizes a targeted curriculum for second language acquisition while examining the most effective pedagogical practices for working with students whose primary language is not English.
- Reading. This program focuses on collaboration and leadership while learning the most effective mentoring and coaching practices. Designed for licensed teachers, it emphasizes a balanced approach to literacy, implements the Common Core English and Language Arts Standards, and concentrates on diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities.
An emphasis on leadership is part of each of the major courses of study.
“Leadership is a key component of all of the College of Education’s programs,” said McQueen. “We are committed to integrity and excellence in teaching, learning and leading. We believe that leadership expertise built on an ethical foundation should be taught in every program, and especially in advanced programs such as the Ed.S. program.”
