The Lipscomb University Campus Recreation office is partnering with Lipscomb’s Veterans Services office to host the First Annual Mission 5K set for Saturday, April 21 at the wood chip path adjacent to the David Lipscomb Campus School Reece L. Smith Athletic Complex located at 1069 Caldwell Lane in Nashville.
Two 5Ks are planned for the day. A 5K for non-Lipscomb student participants begins at 10:30 a.m. with the student race kicking off at 11:30 a.m. There will be activities for the entire family including free inflatables and face painting, live music and food available for purchase and more.
The registration fee before March 31 is $5 for students and $10 for non-students. After March 31, the fee is $10 for students and $15 for non-students. Fees include a t-shirt and refreshments. Prizes will be awarded to the top two male and female runners in each category. Proceeds go to the student veteran mission program that is part of the Veterans Services office.
“A major focus of the campus recreation program is to help people learn how to treat their bodies and how to take care of them. We try to provide opportunities for the community to exercise and to promote wellness. This new event encourages people to take their passion for running and exercise and to apply it to something else you may be passionate about such as serving others on the mission field,” said Emily Harris, director of campus recreation.
Last year, a group of Lipscomb’s student veterans travelled to the small village of Kete Krachi near Lake Volta in Ghana, West Africa to partner with Mobile Medical Disaster Relief and the Touch A Life Foundation on the group’s first mission trip.
“Those who choose the path of a career in the military make the ultimate commitment to serve. That heart for service often remains with these men and women long after they leave the military to pursue other paths in life. We want to make service and mission projects an annual part of the program at Lipscomb,” said Jim Humphrey, director of veterans’ services and assistant dean of students at Lipscomb. “This event has individual physical benefits for the participants that helps support this service effort on a long term basis.”
