Congress' 'voice of civility' Rep. Jim Cooper speaks at Pizza & Politics Oct. 19

Lipscomb University will present U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper at its Pizza & Politics speaker series at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the Shamblin Theatre. This guest lecture is free and open to the public.
Rep. Cooper (5th District) serves on two committees in the House: armed services and government reform. He is currently the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.
A Blue Dog Democrat, Cooper’s independent record has earned him a reputation as an honest broker between political parties.
The Tennessean called Cooper One of the most bipartisan public officials in Tennessee in January 2011, and the New York Times wrote that Cooper is “the House’s conscience, a lonely voice for civility in this ugly era.”
Bob Schieffer, of CBS’s Face the Nation, called him “One of the real experts on (health care) in the House,” in 2009. Colin Levy of The Wall Street Journal wrote, “The problems of the deficit are staggering, and have been Mr. Cooper’s long preoccupation, as well as the essence of his Blue Dog soul.”
