Bartsokas earns NCAA postgraduate scholarship

Lipscomb senior women’s basketball player Jenna Bartsokas has been awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Bartsokas was one of six NCAA women’s basketball players to receive the $7,500 scholarship.
The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.
Bartsokas will graduate from Lipscomb this month with a degree in exercise science/pre-physical therapy. She will pursue a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Walsh University. Throughout her career at Lipscomb she has succeeded on and off the court, as well as in the classroom.
As a student, Bartsokas earned a 3.95 grade point average and made the Dean’s List six out of seven semesters. A member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, she was named to the 1st Team All District Capitol One Academic Team in 2010 and 2011. This year she was also placed on the 3rd Team Capitol One Academic All American Team. Bartsokas has been named to the All A-Sun Academic Team every year since 2008.
Bartsokas has also been magnificent on the court. In her four years as a Lady Bison, she tallied 1,411 points, second most for any Lipscomb player in the NCAA era. Bartsokas is also second in career steals and first in career assists in the NCAA era. As a freshman, Bartsokas made the All A-Sun Freshman Team and she was named to the 2nd Team All A-Sun this past season. This year Bartsokas was honored with the Hancock/Nipper Civitan Sportsmanship Award.
Bartsokas has shown numerous examples of servant leadership since stepping on campus in 2007. She has been a SAAC representative all four years of college. Bartsokas has volunteered for service organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, YES, Room in the Inn, and the Special Olympics. She has also spent time coaching a USBA girl’s youth basketball team and tutoring English vocabulary at Norman Binkley Elementary.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
An equitable approach is employed in reviewing each applicant's nomination form to provide opportunity to all student-athlete nominees to receive the postgraduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through postgraduate study in an accredited graduate degree program.
