Lumination Network takes home several awards at Tennessee Associated Press College Contest

Lipscomb University’s student news service Lumination Network, won big at the 2016 Tennessee Associated Press College Contest, which honored outstanding journalistic works published and broadcast in 2016 in the state of Tennessee, and were announced on Saturday, April 8 at the John Seigenthaler Center at Vanderbilt University.

A subset of the Tennessee Associated Press Broadcasters and APME professional contests, the main competition is open to all AP members in Tennessee and outside Tennessee with designated market areas that extend into Tennessee. To be eligible to enter, entries must be about news, features or sports that occurred solely in Tennessee. Entries must have been broadcast or published in calendar 2016. The college component of competition is open to individuals and teams whose work meets the same requirements and is submitted as a representative of their schools.

Between 11 colleges and 36 AP-member newspapers, television and radio stations, nearly 1,000 entries were submitted in the contest, which featured news and sports coverage from 2016. The professional contest was sponsored by Middle Tennessee State University's School of Journalism.

The award recipients representing Lipscomb University are as follows:

  4. Cole Gray, Honorable Mention, Online Investigative/In-Depth Reporting, “Asbestos Found in Chemistry Department; Professor Assures Safety;”
  5. Becca Risley, Third Place, Online Feature Story, “Freshman Spends Summer Before College as Intern in Africa;”
  6. Whitney Smith, Third Place, TV Investigative/In-Depth Reporting, “Lipscomb Has Largest Budget in History Despite Lower Enrollment;”
  7. Lumination Network, First Place, TV Sports Coverage/Program, “Sports Extra;”
  8. Lumination Network, First Place, Online Multimedia Package, “Dove Awards at Lipscomb University;” and
  9. Lumination News, Second Place, TV Newscast, 12/1/2016 newscast.

Lumination Network is the university’s official student news service, and distributes news in several formats including written articles, photo galleries, TV and radio.

The Tennessee Associated Press Awards are only one of three contests Lipscomb’s Department of Communication and Journalism enters each year. The other two include the Southeast Journalism Conference, which garnered several student awards earlier this year, and the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence awards.
