The Lipscomb University community will celebrate the life of legendary men’s basketball coach Don Meyer at a memorial service Sunday, June 1 at 2 p.m. in the university’s Allen Arena.

Meyer ESPY picMeyer died at his home in Aberdeen, S.D., on May 18 following a six-year battle with cancer. A memorial service was held in Aberdeen on Saturday, May 24. The service is open to the public. Doors open at 1 p.m.

Former players will speak and a video tribute featuring footage from a recent interview with Meyer will be shown as part of the service.

The service will be video streamed live at espn.go.com/watchespn/. It will also be carried live in the Nashville area on NewsChannel5+. Stories and photographs continue to be shared at www.coachmeyertribute.com.

Meyer's former players, assistant coaches, student assistant coaches or trainers, are asked to contact Brent High at brent.high@lipscomb.edu for details about their involvement in the service.

Meyer was named Bisons head coach in 1975. During his 24-year career at Lipscomb, he built the men’s basketball program and its associated camps into a powerhouse that drew the attention of many players, coaches and fans from across the country and around the world. His Lipscomb teams compiled a 665-179 record and competed in 13 NAIA national tournaments, winning the national title in 1986. He also produced the top two all-time scorers in college basketball while at Lipscomb.

In August 1999, Coach Meyer became head coach at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., where he coached for 11 seasons. In 2010, he retired from coaching with a career record of 923 wins and 324 losses, making him one of the winningest coaches in basketball history. Perhaps one of his greatest achievements was that during his 38 years as a head coach only one player who completed his eligibility did not graduate.
