Geena Davis joins Andrews Institute to raise awareness of media images of women/girls

5/11/2012 The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and Lipscomb University’s Nelson and Sue Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership will host “A League of Their Own,” May 24 on the Lipscomb campus. Proceeds from the event will benefit Davis’ institute, the only research-based organization of its kind working within the media and entertainment industry and the Andrews Institute’s collaboration with Geena Davis and Nashville Public Television (NPT) for a new Citizen Leadership Academy for women and girls.

Brown returns to lead Lady Bison basketball program

5/16/2012 Lipscomb University Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson has announced that Greg Brown has been named the fourth head coach in the history of the women’s basketball program. Brown, 41, was the associate women's basketball coach at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and is a former assistant for Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt. He has spent the last five seasons at UCF, helping lead the Knights to two Conference USA championships in 2009 and 2011, resulting in two NCAA berths.

5/16/2012 Lipscomb University presents the 2012 Thomas H. Olbricht Christian Scholars Conference on June 7-9. The conference will host 500 theologians and faith leaders from over 100 different universities. Five special events open to the general public will explore the reconciliation theme with nationally known speakers, film and theatre.

More than 100 pounds lost by 14 students/staff in contest inspired by Biggest Loser

5/9/2012 Fourteen students and staff lost more than 110 pounds in the campus recreation department's annual Biggest Loser competition. To keep up the momentum, the department is offering faculty and staff $1 fitness classes throughout the summer.

Malagasy leaders encourage students to stay true to their principles

5/11/2012 For the past four years, Lipscomb University has been home to 26 students from Madagascar, the largest group of such students at a university in the United States. In the fall of 2008, these students enrolled at Lipscomb after a rigorous selection process through which they earned the opportunity for a college degree paid for by the Malagasy government. On Saturday, May 5, these students walked across the stage to receive their college degrees from Lipscomb University. Former president of Madagascar Marc Ravalomanana and Madagascar’s former ambassador to the U.S. Jocelyn Radifera sent messages to the graduating students and the Lipscomb community to mark the occasion.

5/7/2012 Lipscomb University announces the creation of four new master’s programs, all in rapidly emerging fields in the Tennessee job market. 5/3/2012 Lipscomb University’s College of Pharmacy will set a historic milestone for the university Saturday, May 5, when it awards doctoral degrees for the first time in the institution’s history. The pharmacy graduates will receive the first doctorate degrees awarded at Lipscomb University at spring commencement held at 3 p.m. in Allen Arena.

4/27/2012 Lipscomb University’s College of Education, noted as one of the best in the state at preparing teachers based on the results of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission’s Teacher Preparation Program Report Card, announces its new Ayers Institute for Teacher Learning and Innovation that will focus on improving teacher performance and student outcomes throughout Tennessee with a particular emphasis on teacher and leader development in turn-around schools and rural school systems.

4/24/2012 Lipscomb University’s Institute for Sustainable Practice recently announced the winners of the 2012 Sustainable Business Leadership Awards. Winners were recognized as part of Lipscomb’s fifth annual Sustainable Business Summit, a two-day summit that brought together leading voices in the field of sustainable business practices last month.

4/24/2012 Lipscomb University and Nashville State Community College (NSCC) are partnering to offer a dual admission program that helps give community college students a lower-cost option for completing a four-year degree. Lipscomb is the only private college in Tennessee to date making this available to community college students.

Lipscomb celebrates historic milestones at spring commencement

4/23/2012 A standing-room only crowd of more than 5,000 people helped Lipscomb mark several historic milestones during spring 2012 commencement Saturday, May 5, in Allen Arena. The ceremony marked the largest graduating class in Lipscomb’s history as the university awarded 542 degrees to May graduates and 134 degrees to August graduates to 627 participants. More graduate-level students—197—graduated than in any previous spring semester. The Class of 2012 also included the largest-ever class in nursing and in the bachelor’s in business and sustainability programs.

4/26/2012 Lipscomb University’s College of Education (COE), a known leader and innovator in education in the state of Tennessee, recently received reaccreditation and approval of 22 new or revised teacher education programs by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), a national agency dedicated to improving student learning by improving the quality of teacher education. During the NCATE accreditation site visit earlier this month, the College of Education’s 18 revised teacher licensure programs and four new programs were approved with no areas for improvement cited.

Flener receives 2012 Mary Morris Award for Exemplary Service to Society

4/20/2012 Lipscomb University student Brett Flener received the 2012 Mary Morris Award for Exemplary Service to Society from the university in a special ceremony April 19. Flener, a senior law, justice and society major, is the co-founder of the non-profit Open Table Nashville in 2010 and the lead organizer in the student group Lipscomb University Advocates for Unhoused in 2012.

Lipscomb history professor Dr. Tim Johnson will lead a Civil War Tour to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the nation’s most destructive conflict starting in Washington, D.C. and alumnus Michael Shane Neal will lead a tour of Scotland.

Theatre department honors Buddy Arnold with special weekend performances

4/20/2012 One of Lipscomb’s theatre legends will be honored this weekend with a special production developed by the university theatre department. On April 20-22 in Shamblin Theatre, Lipscomb’s musical theatre students will perform scenes from 10 musicals directed by the late Buddy Arnold (’48), known as one of Lipscomb’s most influential faculty members by generations of Lipscomb students.

4/17/2012 Lipscomb University’s HumanDocs Film Series is partnering with the 2012 Nashville Film Festival to present screenings of a variety of films during the event, which takes place April 19-26. In honor of Earth Day 2012, Lipscomb is hosting two Nashville Film Festival documentary screenings on April 20 in Ward Hall. Events are free and open to the public. The day’s events include:

Tennessee Speaker of the House named 2012 Alumnus of the Year

4/17/2012 Beth Harwell, Tennessee’s first female Speaker of the House, has been named Lipscomb University’s 2012 Alumnus of the Year. A 1978 graduate of Lipscomb, Harwell has served in the Tennessee Legislature since 1988. She will be honored at several receptions and brunches as well as at Lipscomb University’s spring commencement on May 5, where she will address graduates and their families.

TN First Lady Crissy Haslam special guest for Ingram conversation series

4/16/2012 The Nelson and Sue Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership presents Tennessee’s First Lady Crissy Haslam in the second of a Conversation Series hosted by Tom Ingram, an influential adviser to corporate and government officials for four decades. The debut edition of “now that you ask…” in March featured a one-on-one with Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam. This event is free and open to the public.
